Custom Woodworking & Millwork
Cabinets, built-ins, trim, and stairs, made by hand for your house specifically. The carpentry that makes a room feel finished. Serving Wilmington, Southport, Oak Island, and Brunswick County.
Carpentry is where Northstar started
Wood is the part of a house you actually touch.
Drywall and paint are everywhere. What sets one house apart from the next is the woodwork — the cabinet doors you open a dozen times a day, the trim that frames every room, the stair rail under your hand. Chase learned carpentry as a kid on an 80-acre farm, where if something needed building, you built it. Around 24 years in the trade later, that is still the part of the work he cares about most.
Northstar takes woodworking commissions on their own, not only as part of a build. A single run of kitchen cabinets, a library wall of built-ins, a staircase — the scope can be one piece or a whole house of them.
Like everything Northstar does, it is priced cost-plus and designed with you. You see the material costs, you make the calls on species and finish, and the piece gets drawn for your wall, not adapted from somebody else's.
Custom cabinets & kitchen cabinetry
A factory cabinet comes in fixed widths, and your kitchen pays for the difference with filler strips and dead corners. A cabinet maker measures the room and builds to it — full-depth drawers where you need them, a pantry sized to the wall it lives on, doors proportioned to the ceiling height you actually have.
Northstar builds custom cabinets for kitchens, baths, laundry rooms, and workshops across the Wilmington and Southport area. You choose the wood, the joinery shows its quality every time a drawer slides, and the boxes are built to outlast the appliances around them.
- Kitchen cabinets built to your room's exact dimensions
- Solid-wood doors and drawers, hardware you select at cost
- Bath vanities, pantries, and laundry storage to match
Built-ins & shelving
Bookcases that run wall to wall, window seats with storage under the lid, an entertainment wall that swallows the cords and the clutter — built-ins turn leftover space into the best feature in the room. They are also nearly impossible to fake with store-bought furniture, because they have to fit the wall exactly.
Each piece starts with how you will use it. Chase sketches it with you, prices the materials in the open, and builds it scribed tight to your walls and ceilings, which in an older coastal house are rarely as straight as they look.
- Bookcases, window seats, mudroom and closet systems
- Scribed to real walls — no gaps, no caulk-and-pray fit
- Designed around your stuff: books, gear, boots, boats
Trim carpentry & millwork
Trim is the handwriting of a house. Crown, casing, baseboard, wainscoting, coffered and plank ceilings — get the proportions right and every room reads as intentional; get them wrong and something feels off that paint can never fix. This is patient, exacting carpentry, and it is the trade Chase has practiced longest.
In older Southport and downtown Wilmington homes, that often means matching profiles that went out of production generations ago. We can replicate existing millwork so a repaired wall or a new opening disappears into the original room.
- Crown, casing, wainscoting, and ceiling treatments
- Existing profiles matched in older and historic homes
- Tight miters and clean reveals — the details you see daily
Stairs & feature work
A staircase is furniture you walk on, and it is usually the first thing a guest sees. New treads and risers, rebuilt railings and newels, or a full stair replacement — this is structural carpentry and finish carpentry in the same piece, and it has to be solid before it can be beautiful.
Beyond stairs, this is the catch-all for the one-of-a-kind requests: a mantel from a beam you saved, a barn door for a wide opening, an outdoor shower surround that can take the salt air. If it is made of wood and worth doing well, bring it to us.
- Treads, railings, newels, and complete stair rebuilds
- Mantels, barn doors, and one-off feature pieces
- Exterior woodwork detailed for coastal weather
Where we do this work
A working shop for the whole coast
From Southport, Northstar takes woodworking and carpentry jobs across Oak Island, Brunswick County, and up through Wilmington and New Hanover County. Coastal humidity and salt air are hard on wood, so species selection, finishing, and acclimation are not afterthoughts here — they are the difference between millwork that lasts and millwork that moves.

The same hands build the houses
This is what separates a Northstar home
Production builders order their trim and cabinets from a catalog. Northstar builds them — which is why a Northstar custom home feels different the moment you step inside. The woodworking on this page is standard equipment on every house we build from the ground up.
Explore custom home buildingQuestions we get about this work
Do you take woodworking jobs that aren't part of a bigger build?
Yes. The company motto is "small to limitless," and it applies here most of all. A single vanity, one room of trim, a set of kitchen cabinets — standalone woodworking commissions are welcome, and they get the same care as a full custom home.
Can you match the existing trim in our older home?
In most cases, yes. Older homes around downtown Wilmington and Southport carry profiles that stopped being stocked long ago, and matching them is a regular part of our work. Chase will look at the original, tell you honestly how close a match is achievable, and replicate it so the new work blends with the old.
Why choose custom cabinets over box-store cabinets?
Fit and lifespan. Stock cabinets come in preset sizes, so your kitchen gets designed around the cabinet line instead of the room — and the boxes are usually particleboard wrapped in laminate. Custom cabinets are built to your walls out of materials you chose, and under cost-plus you pay actual material and labor cost plus a flat fee, so the price gap is often smaller than people expect.
How is woodworking priced?
The same way every Northstar job is priced: cost-plus. Actual materials and labor, plus a flat 20% builder's fee, with the receipts available to you. If you want to step up from paint-grade to walnut, you pay the real difference in material — not a mystery number.
